4. The 4Cs of a Diamond
The 4Cs of a Diamond
Cut
Cut determines how a diamond interacts with light, creating brilliance, fire, and scintillation. It is evaluated based on proportions such as table size, depth, crown and pavilion angles, as well as polish and symmetry. Diamonds graded Triple Excellent (EX/EX/EX) offer optimal light performance.
Colour
Diamonds are graded from D (colourless) to Z (light yellow or brown). Colour is assessed by comparing the diamond against master stones. Colourless diamonds are the most rare and desirable due to their bright, icy appearance.
Clarity
Clarity refers to natural inclusions within the diamond and blemishes on its surface. It is assessed based on size, number, position, and visibility. Higher clarity grades indicate fewer imperfections and better overall brilliance.
Carat
Carat measures a diamond’s weight, with 1 carat equal to 0.2 grams. A 1-carat diamond typically measures around 6.0–6.6 mm, depending on its cut. Popular sizes include 0.30ct, 0.50ct, 0.70ct, 1ct, 1.20ct, 1.50ct, and 2ct. All four Cs work together to determine a diamond’s value and beauty.
5. Diamond Grading Reports
GIA (Gemological Institute of America)
Founded in 1931, GIA is a non-profit organisation and widely regarded as the world’s most trusted diamond grading authority. It introduced the 4Cs of diamond quality, including the D–Z colour scale and Flawless–I3 clarity scale.
GIA reports provide an independent assessment of a diamond’s quality, including cut, polish, symmetry, and a detailed proportions diagram. Most of eClarity’s diamonds are GIA-certified.
IGI (International Gemological Institute)
Established in 1975 and headquartered in Antwerp, Belgium, IGI is one of the world’s largest independent gemological laboratories. It is known for its efficient turnaround time and competitive pricing.
IGI reports include grading for colour (D–Z) and clarity (IF–I3), along with detailed measurements and proportion data of the diamond.

Guidelines
- For best accuracy, measure your finger at the end of the day when it is at its largest.
- Avoid measuring when your fingers are cold, as they tend to be smaller.
- Use a ruler to verify the printed measurements to ensure the scale is accurate.

9. Jewellery Care & Maintenance
Caring for Your Diamond Jewellery
Proper care ensures your diamond jewellery retains its brilliance and longevity. Daily exposure to skincare products, household chemicals, and natural skin oils can dull a diamond’s sparkle over time.
We recommend professional cleaning every 6 months, using specialised tools and solutions to remove accumulated dirt and restore shine.
As we often say, “A diamond is forever, but the setting is not.” If your jewellery has experienced impact—such as being dropped or knocked—we strongly advise a professional check to ensure the diamond remains securely set. This service is complimentary for eClarity members. GIA also recommends a yearly check and polish to maintain your jewellery’s condition.
Care Tips
- Protect your jewellery from impact, scratches, chemicals, and extreme temperatures
- Store pieces in a soft pouch or box, ideally separated to prevent scratching
- Avoid contact with chemicals such as perfumes, hairspray, and nail polish remover
- Remove jewellery during activities such as cleaning, gardening, or sports
- Avoid wearing jewellery while swimming, as chlorine can damage both metal and stones
10. Maintaining the Lustre of Precious Metals
White Gold
White gold is naturally pale yellow and is plated with rhodium to achieve its bright, silvery-white finish. Rhodium is a durable metal that enhances shine and corrosion resistance. Over time, this plating may wear off, revealing a warmer tone beneath—replating is recommended to restore its original brilliance.
Rose Gold
Rose gold contains a higher copper content, which gives it its warm hue. With time, exposure to air may cause slight oxidation, resulting in a deeper tone. Professional polishing can help restore its original colour and shine.
Yellow Gold
Yellow gold is not plated, so it does not require replating. However, with regular wear, it may lose its shine over time. Polishing can effectively restore its natural lustre.
